PSL set to conclude Royal AM saga following key meeting

According to Sowetan, the board is likely to ratify a recommendation made by the PSL's executive committee last week, which proposes the expulsion of Royal AM from the league.

This comes after the club's owner, Shauwn Mkhize, reportedly ran afoul of the South African Revenue Service (SARS), resulting in the club being placed under curatorship.

If the recommendation is confirmed, Royal AM's expulsion would significantly impact the structure of the DStv Premiership. The league would continue with just 15 teams, and all of Royal AM's results from the 11 matches they've played this season would be annulled.

The decision would also reshape the current standings. Several clubs that earned points against Royal AM - including Mamelodi Sundowns, Polokwane City, AmaZulu, Golden Arrows, and TS Galaxy - would see their point totals reduced.

Sundowns, who are currently 12 points clear of second-placed Orlando Pirates, would lose the three points earned from their win over Royal.

At the lower end of the table, the changes could prove costly. SuperSport United, who drew with Royal AM earlier in the season, would lose a valuable point in their fight against relegation.

Cape Town City and Richards Bay are also expected to forfeit points, potentially pulling them deeper into the danger zone.

Thursday's meeting features five items on the agenda, but the key focus areas - listed as items A and B - revolve around Royal AM's status in the league: namely, whether to endorse the executive committee's recommendation to terminate the club's membership and officially expel them.

Royal AM's troubles have been brewing since 2023, when FIFA imposed a transfer ban on the club for failing to settle a contract dispute involving striker Samir Nurkovic.

Last month, an attempt by the SARS-appointed curator to auction off the club's assets fell through. With the club unable to meet its obligations, the PSL executive committee concluded that it could no longer be part of the league.
