The decision was made during a BoG meeting held in Johannesburg on Thursday.
According to TimesLive, the majority of the BoG voted in favor of removing the club from the Betway Premiership. However, the PSL has not yet clarified what the expulsion means for relegation and promotion in the current season.
Royal AM has been inactive since late 2024, following serious financial trouble linked to club owner Shauwn Mkhize. Reports emerged that Mkhize owed the South African Revenue Service (SARS) an estimated R40 million in unpaid taxes, leading to the freezing of the club's assets.
The situation worsened when the club was placed under curatorship in November. Since then, Royal AM has struggled to operate, failing to pay players and technical staff, and unable to fulfill both league and cup fixtures. Their last appearance on the pitch was towards the end of last year, with the team only managing to play 11 matches this season.
Last week, the PSL's executive committee recommended Royal AM's expulsion due to their failure to meet league obligations. The BoG has now formalized that recommendation with a decisive vote.
Further complications arose in March when an attempted auction of the club's assets collapsed. The winning bidder failed to transfer the agreed funds into the designated account before the deadline, leaving the club in continued limbo.
The PSL has not yet announced what Royal AM's expulsion means for the rest of the season. For now, the club's removal marks a major setback and a sad moment in South African football.
