Orlando Pirates edge Algerian opponents in CAF quarter-final

Mohau Nkota scored the only goal of the game at Stade du 5 Juillet with 65 minutes on the clock.

But it was all Alger in the opening half, with Pirates stopper Sipho Chaine forced to make an early near post save to keep out Emmanuel Zunon.

Zaharia Naidoo then fired into the side-netting as Alger continued to press forward, before Chaine made another good save to deny Naidoo as the first period drew to a close.

It was a similar story at the start of the second half, with the Buccaneers forced to sit back and soak up the pressure.

But the introduction of Nkota for Kabelo Dlamini on the hour mark had the desired impact as the substitute netted just five minutes later, with a neat finish after connecting to a Relebohile Mofokeng pass, to ease the pressure on the traveling team.

The response from the home side was fierce, but Chaine managed to keep his goal intact.

Alger captain Ayoub Abdellaoui had a goal disallowed for a foul on Chaine while a number of late second half substitutes further stifled Alger's play as Bucs held on for the win.

The return leg will take place at the Orlando Stadium on Wednesday.
