Orlando Pirates prepare for tough CAF Champions League clash against Pyramids
Orlando Pirates are set to host Pyramids FC in the first leg of the CAF Champions League semi-final at Orlando Stadium on Saturday.
The Buccaneers are one of three Premier Soccer League (PSL) clubs that have reached the final four of CAF competitions this season. Pirates join Mamelodi Sundowns in the Champions League semi-finals, while Stellenbosch FC have reached the same stage in the CAF Confederation Cup.
Khanye, a vocal critic of Pirates in the past, admitted the team has exceeded his expectations, but insists their journey will end before the title.
"They've proven me wrong, and I applaud them for that. But I still haven't seen enough to believe they can win this competition. Yes, they're one of the best teams left and possibly even the favourites at this point, but I just don't see them lifting the trophy," Khanye told Soccer Laduma.
While skeptical about their title hopes, Khanye praised the club's bold move to trust and promote young talent.
"They have some exciting youngsters, everyone knows them. I'm talking about Relebohile Mofokeng, Mohau Nkota, Thalente Mbatha, and Mbekezeli Mbokazi. When it comes to identifying talent, credit must go to Orlando Pirates," he added.
Pirates sealed their spot in the semi-finals by defeating Tunisian giants Esperance 1-0 on aggregate in the quarter-finals, continuing their impressive continental campaign.
