Chippa United coach Thabo September: We hope the move to East London happens
Chippa United coach Thabo September feels the Betway Premiership club will benefit from moving to East London.
Among the players likely to move on are Nigerian international and club captain Stanley Nwabali, as well as standout midfielder Sinoxolo Kwayiba. Both have been pivotal to Chippa's progress this season and have attracted serious interest from top clubs locally and abroad.
Nwabali, who gained global attention during Nigeria's run to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final, remains one of the most sought-after goalkeepers on the continent.
Meanwhile, Kwayiba - who joined from Pretoria Callies last season - has impressed with six league goals from midfield and recently earned a national team call-up.
September acknowledged the inevitable departures but maintained confidence in the club's long-term vision.
"We will lose players, but we will definitely keep the core of the team. When building a squad, sometimes you need to sell your best players to invest in younger talent. It's part of the process," September was quoted by Sportswire.com.
While Kwayiba and Nwabali are expected to attract transfer offers, the futures of other senior players remain uncertain. Andile Jali, who arrived with high expectations following stints at Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns, has been limited by fitness issues.
The veteran midfielder has made just 11 appearances this season and hasn't featured since February - his departure is now seen as likely.
On the other hand, Bienvenu Eva Nga, despite his modest goal return of three league strikes, is not expected to be part of the player exodus.
Also departing is midfielder Siphelo Baloni, whose loan from Orlando Pirates will not be extended. He was absent during Chippa's goalless draw against Golden Arrows this past weekend, a result that kept their top-eight hopes alive.
Chippa currently sit ninth on the Betway Premiership table with 29 points from 22 matches - just one point shy of eighth-placed Kaizer Chiefs, whom they host in a crucial clash in two weeks.
As the season winds down, Chippa United are clearly preparing for a transition, aiming to retain a competitive edge while developing a younger, more dynamic squad under September's leadership.
