After leaving Mamelodi Sundowns in July last year, Zungu revealed that there interest for his services from several teams, including Wydad, where his former coach Rhulani Mokwena was briefly in charge. The move to North Africa appeared to be a done deal, until it unexpectedly collapsed.
"There was a verbal agreement before I went there. That's why I went, I wouldn't go for nothing," Zungu said in an interview with FARPost.
The former Bafana Bafana international trained with the Moroccan side and believed a contract was imminent. However, after assessing the situation on the ground, Zungu sensed instability at the club.
"I believe the club was going through a transition, even though I was not told directly," he added. "There were a lot of ins and outs, players coming and going. I've been in the game for a long time, and I could see it."
With interest mounting from local clubs, including AmaZulu, Zungu said he was forced to make a decision after Wydad failed to follow through.
"I was making the teams that wanted me wait, like AmaZulu and others, because I was still hoping things would work out with Wydad."
Eventually, Zungu returned home and signed with Usuthu, where he is now enjoying regular football under coach Arthur Zwane.
The 31-year-old has made 14 appearances across all competitions and scored once, showing flashes of the experience and quality that once earned him a stint in Europe.
