Dani Olmo's early second-half strike proved decisive as Barça claimed three crucial points, extending their lead at the top of LaLiga to seven points over Real Madrid, who are due to face Getafe on Wednesday. The win also marked a historic milestone, with Barcelona tying a LaLiga record for most shots in a single match since data collection began in 2003 - matching Real Madrid's 40-shot performance against Real Zaragoza in 2011.
"It was 40 shots - not all on target, but 40," Flick noted in his post-match press conference. "The football we played was very good. We created a great number of opportunities. Of course, we missed a lot, but to keep a clean sheet and secure a 1-0 win, especially with so many changes to the lineup, I'm pleased with the performance."
Barcelona's attacking dominance was evident from the outset, with 24 attempts registered in the first half alone. However, they were repeatedly denied by Mallorca goalkeeper Leo Roman, who delivered a standout performance with 12 saves in what was his first start since January.
Among those denied were Olmo himself, whose earlier effort was parried brilliantly by Roman, and Gavi, who struck the post. Ronald Araujo also missed a golden opportunity, failing to convert from close range.
Olmo ultimately broke the deadlock just 46 seconds into the second half with a composed finish, becoming the fifth Barcelona player this season to reach double-digit goals across all competitions - joining Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha, Lamine Yamal, and Ferran Torres.
"I'm always thinking positively, so the idea of us losing didn't enter my mind," Flick commented. "Controlling the game and minimizing mistakes was more important to me. A 1-0 result, when paired with a clean sheet and improved defensive organization, is a step forward. We're moving in the right direction."
Flick took the opportunity to rotate his squad ahead of Saturday's Copa del Rey final against arch-rivals Real Madrid. Notable absences from the starting lineup included Pau Cubarsi, Frenkie de Jong, and Raphinha, all of whom began the match on the bench. Defender Jules Kounde, meanwhile, saw his streak of 86 consecutive Barcelona appearances come to an end as he was an unused substitute.
One of the notable inclusions was Ansu Fati, making only his second start in all competitions this season-and his first since October. The 21-year-old forward played 62 minutes and registered four of Barcelona's 40 shots before being replaced by Raphinha.
Asked whether Fati had taken a step forward, Flick responded affirmatively: "Yes, I believe so. You can see the support from his teammates and the fans. It was a very good day for him, and it will certainly help build his confidence. He's shown belief in himself, and that's important - not just for him but for the entire squad."
The German manager concluded by praising the collective effort: "You can see the cohesion within the team. Every player who came in understood their role and how we want to play. That level of connection is important, and I'm pleased with what I saw."
Barcelona now turn their focus to the Copa del Rey final, a key fixture in their pursuit of domestic silverware as they continue to push on multiple fronts this season.
