Harry Kane's header sparks Bayern comeback in Augsburg thriller

Vincent Kompany's men overcame an early deficit, a red card for the hosts, and an injury scare to secure a vital away win ahead of a blockbuster week featuring Champions League action against Inter Milan and a domestic clash with Borussia Dortmund.

Augsburg stunned the league leaders on the half-hour mark when captain Jeffrey Gouweleeuw's quick free-kick caught Bayern napping. Dimitrios Giannoulis seized the moment, taking a clever touch before rifling a shot off the underside of the bar past Manuel Neuer.

"All of us expected a difficult game," Kompany said post-match. "After Augsburg's goal, we were able to stay calm and get back into the game."

Bayern responded just before the break. Leroy Sane, who had spurned earlier chances, turned provider, cutting in from the left to find Jamal Musiala. The young star shrugged off Gouweleeuw and Cedric Zesiger before drilling a fierce shot into the net to level the score at 1-1. It was a timely boost for Die Roten, who had been sluggish until that point.

The second half brought drama. Musiala, Bayern's first-half hero, limped off with a hamstring issue just minutes after the restart, leaving Kompany with fresh concerns. "We obviously have a few injuries right now," the Bayern boss admitted. "We don't know how bad Jamal's injury actually is, but we need every player."

While the extent of Musiala's knock remains unclear, the club confirmed on X that he'll undergo scans this week ahead of their European showdown.

Augsburg's hopes unravelled shortly before the hour mark. Zesiger, already on a yellow, gifted the ball to Harry Kane and then hauled him down in a clumsy challenge, earning a second booking and a red card.

From the resulting free-kick, Michael Olise curled in a pinpoint cross, and Kane powered home a diving header from six yards to put Bayern ahead. "It was a good away win," Kompany added, "and now we are looking forward to the Champions League."

Bayern sealed the points in stoppage time when Sane's shot from the left edge of the box deflected past Finn Dahmen, marking his 50th Bundesliga goal. Augsburg, who had been unbeaten in the league in 2025 until this defeat, saw their European ambitions take a hit, while Bayern's focus now shifts to Inter.

"We are going to further analyse Inter," Kompany said of Thomas Muller's potential role. "We have different players for different situations, but everyone has to be prepared mentally to play at any moment."

With Musiala's fitness in doubt and Leverkusen facing Heidenheim next, Bayern's resilience could prove decisive in their title charge. For now, Kompany's side have shown they can grind out results even when the odds stack up against them.
