Bukayo Saka's ankle scare sparks Arsenal's rally in Ipswich rout

The Gunners, riding high from their 5-1 aggregate demolition of Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-finals, kept their momentum with a clinical display in Suffolk, but Saka's injury cast a shadow over the victory.

The incident occurred in the 32nd minute when Ipswich's Leif Davis launched a reckless challenge on Saka's ankle, earning a straight red card. Referee Chris Kavanagh's decision stood firm after a VAR review, with the foul deemed to have "endangered Saka's safety."

Saka, pivotal in Arsenal's dominant first half, soldiered on until the 57th minute before being replaced by Ethan Nwaneri, leaving the pitch with ice strapped to his right ankle.

Manager Mikel Arteta remained optimistic about Saka's recovery, downplaying the severity of the injury ahead of the first leg against PSG on April 29 at the Emirates Stadium.

"Bukayo was a bit sore, but it's nothing serious, so that's good," Arteta said. "The tackle wasn't intentional, but it was dangerous. When a player's back is to goal, their foot is planted, and they can't react, it's a risk."

Saka, who recently returned from a three-month absence following hamstring surgery, has been instrumental for Arsenal this season.

His influence was clear against Ipswich, where he set up Leandro Trossard's opener in the 14th minute and played a key role in Gabriel Martinelli's goal in the 28th, with Mikel Merino flicking on his cross. Trossard added a second in the 69th minute, and Nwaneri sealed the rout late on.

"The first 35 minutes were some of the best we've played this season," Arteta said. "We dominated with high intensity and clear intent. The red card changed the game's context, letting us control it and add two more goals while rotating players."

Arsenal, who have yet to lift the Champions League trophy, are now focused on ensuring their star winger is fit to face PSG. A recent post on X from Arsenal's official account echoed Arteta's confidence, stating: "Bukayo's feeling positive, and we're working to have him ready for the big one!"

The Gunners' commanding performance at Ipswich underlined their depth and attacking flair, but Saka's fitness remains the key talking point as they chase European glory.

With the semi-final looming, Arsenal fans will be hoping their talisman can shake off this latest knock and lead their charge against the French giants.
