Fairgrounds in Pomona to host cricket matches at 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles
Fairgrounds in Pomona, Southern California, will be the venue for cricket during the 2028 Olympic Games hosted by Los Angeles, the organising committee has announced.
Scheduled between the men's and women's individual tournaments, the new competition will be played over 36 holes—18 as foursomes and 18 as fourballs.
Golf returned to the Olympics in 2016 with individual events, with the likes of Justin Rose, Scottie Scheffler, Nelly Korda, and Lydia Ko winning gold medals.
International Golf Federation director Antony Scanlon said: "Golf was incredibly successful at Paris 2024 and as we continue building on the momentum from Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020, we're excited to bring even more attention to our sport through this additional format.
"The athletes were very enthusiastic about their desire to play with their compatriots, and we look forward to watching them compete together in Los Angeles."
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who claimed gold in the men's individual event at the 2024 Paris Olympics, welcomed the news of the mixed-team addition.
"It sounds like some of us may have another opportunity to win a gold medal for our country, which is always cool," he said.
"A mixed-team event should be fun. As far as the Olympics goes, any time you get to go and represent your country, it's a really special feeling."
With the addition of the new format, golf joins archery, athletics, gymnastics, coastal rowing, table tennis, and beach sprint rowing as sports featuring mixed-gender events at the 2028 Olympics.
